How do you keep from absorbing a client's energy in a Reiki Session?

How do you keep your energy separate from theirs?

These are two of the most common questions I get, especially from my Reiki Level 1 students..

.

And the answer is,

I don’t.

.

.

There are certainly important practices for disconnecting from a client’s energy field after a session, cleansing and refreshing your system, and continually returning to a coherent energetic field.

But when I’m actually in session… the last thing I’m trying to do is keep my energy separate from theirs.

.

.

I allow my body, nervous system, and energetic field to engage deeply and unite with the client’s energy to become active participants in the healing process. I allow the energy that we’re clearing in session to move THROUGH me and then OUT of me.

.

This isn’t the same as unconsciously taking on or holding a client’s pain for them (that's a different story). This is more of a natural synergy that takes place - a willingness to let my body and energetic field become part of the process, using that added capacity to help move, metabolize, and dissipate what is ready to be transmuted.

.

.

Imagine my client’s energetic density - the stuck emotions, trapped stress cycles, stagnant chi, and overall energetic “gunk” clogging, slowing down, and/or dysregulating their system - as an ICE CUBE

The natural, desired state of that ice cube in this analogy is water: free-flowing and able to circulate throughout their system with ease.

.

The process of “healing” here is the process of melting that ice cube: warming it up, or better yet, raising its vibration so that it changes from a denser state (solid) to a less dense one (liquid).

As it returns to water, it’s no longer “backing up” , slowing down, or freezing or distorting the energy around it.

.

.

When we introduce Reiki to that ice cube, Reiki acts like the warmth of the sun

.

Place an ice cube out in the sunshine, and it naturally begins to melt. That’s Reiki doing its thing - in the most simplistic analogy I can give you—“warming up,” “breaking apart,” and raising the vibrational frequency of the energetic density disrupting the natural flow of chi in the body.

.

.

Now imagine pouring HOT WATER over that same ice cube.

It melts so much faster.

.

Why?

Thermodynamics (Yay, physics!)

.

Water has a much higher HEAT CAPACITY than the warm air and sunshine. it’s a DENSER expression of that same “melting” thermal energy. It can hold and transfer much more heat to warm up and melt that ice cube more effectively.

.

.

Reiki is a beautiful and powerful energy on its own. But it’s also nonphysical.

.

Our bodies, however, are physical. They’re denser. They have the potential for so much more “heat capacity” in this analogy. They can metabolize, transmute, and “melt” the client’s energetic and emotional density alongside Reiki, but even more powerfully.

.

.

My body in a Reiki session is the hot water in this analogy.

In this process, the client’s energy becomes deeply entwined with mine. That ice cube meets my “hot water” and is absorbed and melted through it.

.

(And if/when you begin working with pleasure as a healing energy, that sh!t is like MOLTEN LAVA - the highest “heat capacity” of energy work I’ve encountered)

.

.

And it doesn’t just stay "absorbed" in my system. Once the ice has melted back into water, it can flow again—back to the client, out into a larger field of energy… this is where it gets even more abstract. But it’s no longer lodged in either of our systems as the energetic density that was causing the dysregulation.

.

And this is an imperfect analogy.

.

But I hope this illustrates the mechanics of this type of energy work, or at least how I see it.

.

.

I’m never trying to “avoid” or keep myself separate from my client’s energy in session. I’m actively allowing myself to become part of the process. Using the energetic transmutative power of my body alongside Reiki.

.

.

It’s also said that as you deepen your relationship and practice with Reiki, you no longer are channeling Reiki, you simply ARE Reiki. You embody it fully. It stops moving THROUGH you and starts moving AS you. At this point there is no separation between the sun and the hot water. They are one in the same transmuting and melting the density within the client.
